Bill on HR Commission in next JS session

The government is framing a law providing for the much talked about Human Rights Commission that will come in the form of a bill in the next session of Parliament.

The cabinet committee on the proposed Human Rights Commission yesterday went through the final draft, which is expected to finalise it in the next meeting scheduled for January 22.

Law Minister Maudud Ahmed, who chaired the meeting, said they have considered the entire draft and decided to finalise it in the next meeting.

After approval by the cabinet, it will be placed before Parliament in the coming session.

About its salient features, Maudud said the Human Rights Commission would have five members including a retired judge and a woman. Three others will be drawn from personalities having role in the field of human rights. From among those five, one will head the commission as chairman.

In case of allegation against any member of the commission, the Supreme Court will conduct investigation and the findings will be submitted to the President for action, Maudud added.

LGRD Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Communications Minister Nazmul Huda, Telecommunication Minister Aminul Haq, Land Minister Shamsul Islam, Science and ICT Minister Dr Moyen Khan attended the meeting.
