BCL leader hacked by 'Shibir men'
Shibir cadres cut the tendons of a Chhatra League leader and shot another on Rajshahi University campus last night, police said.
Tawhid al Tuhin, general secretary of the BCL's RU unit, was undergoing surgery at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The tendons of his left hand and right leg were cut, doctors said, adding that the victim also suffered several other cut wounds.
Shawan Sarker, social affairs secretary of the same unit, was also admitted to the RMCH with bullet injuries on his right hand.
SM Moniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star that the Shibir men attacked Tuhin as he had played a key role in driving out Shibir men from the campus.
Md Mamun, an eye witness and BCL activist of Ward 26 of the city, told The Daily Star that the attack took place around 10:00pm when five to seven BCL men were returning to Madar Box hall from Sayed Amir Ali hall.
Around 16 Shibir men suddenly started hacking away at Tuhin while some 30 others took position around the scene, said Mamun.
As another BCL group led by BCL President Mizanur Rahman rushed to the spot, the attackers blasted several cocktails and fired gun shots and then left.
Security was beefed up in and around the campus following the incident and police raided different areas to arrest the attackers. None, however, was arrested.
Meanwhile, the BCL unit of Dhaka University brought out a procession around 11:45pm on the campus to protest the incident.
