Barapukuria miners return to work
The miners of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) in Parbatipur upazila of the district yesterday postponed their indefinite strike until June 25 following an assurance of State Minister for Land Md. Mostafizur Rahman.
Mostafizur Rahman, also lawmaker from Parbatipur-Phulbari constituency, talked to the leaders of BCMCL workers' union over cellphone in the morning and assured them that the authorities concerned would actively consider their demands.
At around 11:00am, the miners sat in a meeting and decided to postpone their strike until June 25. They resumed mining operation at 12:00 noon.
'We have postponed our programme until June 25 following the assurance given by the minister,” said Wazed Ali Sarker, president of BCMCL Workers' Union.
Around 1041 miners went on an indefinite strike from Thursday morning as their 72-hour ultimatum given to the BCMCL authorities to meet their five-point demand ended at 6:00am on the day.
The demands are regularisation of jobs of 147 workers engaged in underground and surface mining operations, appointment of a full-time doctor for the workers, disbursement of profit bonus for 2011 and 2012, introduction of life insurance scheme and food rationing for the miners.
