Bangladeshi poet honoured abroad
Arousing reception was accorded to Bangladeshi humanist and modern mystic poet and lyricist Sabir Ahmed Chowdhury by the Meghdut Cultural Center of Kolkata, recently, at its 19th founding anniversary in Kolkata Mahajati Sadan. On the occasion a grand cultural function included recitation and discussions on the humanist ideals of his poetical works. The very theme of the oneness of humanity from the poet's following lyrics pervaded the whole gamut of the musical performances and songs along with dance-drama made the huge gatherings spell-bound.
The sky is the canopy of my house
While this world is the house of mine
Where I feel every human is my relation.
I do not distinguish between caste and creed or faith.
Irrespective of different languages
Every human is equal in the society,
That's my belief.
I am an invincible part of humanity.
Because love and kindness of God
Exist in me.
Because my heart cries out
for human suffering.
(translated by M Mizanur Rahman)
