Trial run on Dohazari-Cox's Bazar route planned for Nov 2: railways minister
Bangladesh Railway (BR) is set to conduct a trial run on the Dohazari-Cox's Bazar rail line on November 2.
Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan confirmed the development today while visiting the old Kalurghat Bridge in the port city. He also said the installation of the rail track on the bridge was complete.
The renovation of the old bridge was the primary obstacle to initiating train operations on the Cox's Bazar line.
He announced, "We plan to do a trial run on this route by November 2."
The 102km dual-gauge rail line connecting Chattogram to Cox's Bazar will include nine new stations, facilitating better accessibility to the tourist destination.
Originally, the government aimed to construct a metre-gauge rail line from Chattogram to Gundhum in Cox's Bazar, with a budget of Tk 1,852.35 crore in 2010. However, the decision was later made to opt for a dual-gauge line to Cox's Bazar town, raising the cost to Tk 18,034.47 crore.
Funded by the Asian Development Bank, the fast-track project is divided into two segments: Dohazari to Chakaria and Chakaria to Cox's Bazar.
There are plans for a Dhaka to Cox's Bazar train service as well.
