Govt forms branch dedicated to road safety
The road transport and bridges ministry has formed a new road safety branch, headed by a deputy secretary, that will be responsible for road safety-related issues.
The Road Transport and Highways Division under the ministry today posted Zahirul Islam, a deputy secretary who was transferred to the division recently, to the road safety branch.
The development comes at a time when road safety has become a contentious issue and a hot topic as the country is witnessing a gradual rise in road crashes and deaths.
Forming a road safety cell or branch under the ministry has long been talked about and the branch has finally been formed, a joint secretary of the division said.
The branch will work under the estate wing of the division, he told The Daily Star.
Till this cell, there was no dedicated arm of the ministry to look after road safety issues.
