Ctg lighter vessel workers call off strike after 14 hours
Lighter vessel workers called off their strike following assurances that their demands would be met after 14 hours.
Unloading of imported goods at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port and goods transported by lighter vessels from Chattogram resumed after they called off their strike.
Leaders of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union announced withdrawal of the strike at 7:30pm today (November 11, 2022) after 3-hour long fruitful meeting with Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Chairman M Shahjahan at CPA conference room, our Chattogram staff correspondent reports quoting Md Nabi Alam, vice president of the union.
Nabi said they decided to withdraw the strike as the port chairman assured of meeting their prime demand of cancelling lease of Charpara jetty to a firm.
The workers under the banner "Sorbostorer Noujan Sramikbrindo" on Thursday afternoon announced the strike to press home their five-point demand.
Their demands included suspension of chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), cancellation of CPA's lease of Charpara jetty used by the lighter vessel workers, suspension of OC of Patenga Police Station, survey of vessels to be done at Parky Char area, and preparing estuary of Sangu River for anchorage of lighter vessels by dredging.
Unloading of imported bulk goods from bigger vessels to lighter vessels at the outer anchorage and transport to across the country were suspended since 6:00am today due to the strike.
Around 1,800 lighter vessels are engaged in the goods transport from Chattogram on inland water routes.
The problem ensued over leasing a jetty built by CPA at Charpara of Patenga area in the city for the usage of the lighter vessel workers to get on and off the coast.
Earlier hundreds of lighter vessels used to wait upstream of the Karnaphuli before going to the outer anchorage of Chattogram port for unloading import goods from larger vessels.
