A 13km long tailback formed on Bangabandhu Bridge east link road in Tangail and Sirajganj today (July 15, 2022) creating a long for the Eid holidaymakers even more tiring, who were returning to the capital and their respective workplaces to resume work after a long vacation.
The vehicles carrying the passengers were taking several hours to reach their destinations, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting passengers and transport workers.
The Bangabandhu Bridge Traffic Control Room sources told The Daily Star at 6pm that the toll collection remained suspended at the west toll plaza due to the huge pressure of additional number of vehicles coming to Dhaka from the northern districts.
There was some pressure of vehicles on both sides of the Bangabandhu Bridge over the last few days, especially since this morning, sources said.
Police said the vehicular movement was suspended on the road at around 10am after a mango-laden truck overturned on the road near Analiabari area after one of its tyres burst, triggering a 13km-long tailback on the two-lane busy east link road of the bridge.
Vehicular movement resumed slowly on the highway at 11:30am after the authorities removed the vehicle from the road, said Ataur Rahman, in-charge of Elenga Highway Police Outpost.
Later, a passenger bus broke down on the same road, yet again worsening the traffic situation on the highway with increasing pressure of vehicles, Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, told The Daily Star.
"Police were working to bring the traffic congestion to normalcy," he added.
The bitter hot weather added to the woes of the passengers. In addition, passengers said that the shortage of buses and high fares were making them more irritable, aside from being stuck in the traffic jam on the highway.
The tailback remained standstill till the filing of this report at around 6:45pm.
