‘Ensure our water rights’
Around 100 people in Rajshahi yesterday demanded effective steps to ensure water rights of marginalised people in Barind region, including ethnic Mahali community of Mundumala municipality of Tanore upazila.
They formed a human chain at the city's Saheb Bazar Zero Point and, later, handed over a memorandum with a four-point demand to the deputy commissioner.
The demands include installation of adequate deep tube-wells and submersible pumps in Mahalipara and saving the ponds and other waterbodies of Barind.
Indigenous Mahali Bamboo Cane Development Organization in collaboration with BARCIK organised the event.
Presiding over the programme, Mahali organisation's president Chichilia Hembrom said people in the area have to travel one kilometre to get drinking water.
Rina Tudu, a Mahalipara resident, said she went to local authorities several times for support but to no avail.
