Supporting rebel: Jamalpur AL leader relieved from party position
Jamalpur District Awami League joint general secretary Prof Suruzzaman Hossain has been relieved from all posts of the party.
A letter signed Jamalpur District AL President Muhammad Baqi Billah and General Secretary Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury was sent to the media in this regard this evening, reports our local correspondent.
According to the letter, Prof Suruzzaman recently posted a status from his personal Facebook account where he wanted Mayor of Dewanganj Municipality Nurunnabi Apu as the general secretary of the upazila unit AL.
Nurunnabi Apu was elected as a rebel candidate against the boat symbol in the municipal elections and was expelled from Dewanganj upazila AL, it said.
Prof Suruzzaman was relieved from the part post as per article 47 (9) of the party constitution as he has breached party discipline by taking stand of an expelled leader.
Meanwhile, he has been asked to explain within seven days as to why he should not be expelled from the organisation.
According to sources, the triennial conference of Jamalpur district AL will be held on November 28 and Prof Suruzzaman declared himself as a candidate for the post of general secretary.
On Saturday, advertisements related to his candidacy were published in local dailies. The following day, he was relived from the party post.
Contacted, Professor Suruzzaman said that he has received the letter.
"The status which was posted from my personal Facebook account was not against the party," he claimed.
He added that leaders somewhere misunderstood his statement.
