Media’s role imperative
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said the role of media in consolidating democracy is undeniable.
She called upon the media to work for building a better and prosperous Bangladesh by providing accurate information.
The speaker also urged the media to play a more effective role in sustaining the ongoing development of the country.
She was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the 26th Annual General Meeting 2021 of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
In her speech, she said since its inception, DRU has been working tirelessly for establishing rights, professional development and dignity of media personnel.
"DRU has been implementing various programmes and initiatives for developing objective, constructive journalism; welfare of journalists; enhancing mutual cooperation; and improving professionalism. The leaders of the organisation have been working very efficiently and smoothly," she added.
The speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government has ensured different benefits for journalists, including enactment of the Journalist Welfare Trust Act.
"Under her able leadership, Bangladesh today is established as 'Digital Bangladesh'. Digital facilities have reached remote areas of the country. Due to the benefits, it has become possible to connect virtually," added the Speaker.
She said DRU sponsors male journalists and female journalists equally, which is commendable.
Presided over by DRU President Mursalin Nomani, the programme was conducted by DRU General Secretary Moshiur Rahman Khan.
