Link with Chhatra Dal: BCL beats up 5 youths, hands them over to police

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have beaten up five youths suspecting their link with Chhatra Dal while checking cell phones of people blocking the entrance of Dhaka University campus.

Around 10:00am, the BCL activists beat up the five youths at Nilkhet intersection and handed them over to the police.

Riazul Islam, president of Sir F Rahman Hall unit BCL, said they confirmed that the five have link with JCD after checking their cell phones.

Contacted, Nur Mohammad, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told The Daily Star that they detained five suspected activists of JCD for interrogation.

"We would release them if we don't find their involvement with any criminal offenses," he said.

A section of BCL men were randomly checking cell phones of people at Nilkhet intersection from 6:00am today, according to witnesses.

The BCL men were checking the browsing history of mobile phones to confirm whether they have any link with Chhatra Dal.

Besides, the BCL leaders and activists were also seen taking position at the Shaheed Minar, Shahbagh, TSC, and Palashi intersection areas, witnesses said.

Why has the BCL taken a position at the entrance, Ariful Islam, secretary of the DU BCL unit, said they were given such instruction from the organisation.
