JP MP blasts Obaidul for transport failures
Jatiya Party MP Mujibul Haque Chunnu yesterday told parliament that Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader had completely failed in road transport management.
Speaking on a point of order, the secretary general of the main opposition also made a remark about the frequent deaths in road crashes. He, however, also acknowledged that Quader had done a lot to develop infrastructure.
"But we have not seen a transport policy and proper management in Dhaka city," he said. "[Issuance of] 24 lakh driving licences [are] stuck today. Vehicles cannot move in Dhaka city. There are no good buses. Does the government not have the ability to launch 500-1,000 new buses in the city?"
"Most of the buses on city roads are old and rickety. They don't have licences. They don't bother to abide by the laws and park on the streets."
Pointing to JP MP Moshiur Rahman, who was sitting next to him, he said, "The president of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association is right next to me. I [would] tell him, be kind to people. The vehicles have no brakes, they have old engines and no proper paint job even. Neither the government nor anybody else is looking into it."
"You are hurting the people in collusion with the government."
Moshiur, who spoke on a point of order later, said, "I don't understand why he raised this issue. Is it because I was the secretary general of Jatiya Party before him or is it because I am the president of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association?"
Law enforcement agencies and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority are responsible for checking whether the vehicles are fit, he said, adding that necessary actions related to road safety issues were being taken.
