Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said, "The goal we fought for was not achieved. Today, democracy has disappeared from the country."

Fakhrul said, "We pay homage to those who gave their lives for independence. The Liberation War's hopes and aspirations were to establish a democratic state, a democratic society. That, however, did not happen. Today, the authoritarian Awami League government has established a one-party government."

He made the remarks after paying tributes at the National Memorial in Savar today, our local correspondent reports.

The BNP secretary general said that Khaleda Zia had been arrested in a false case, and she is not being permitted to seek treatment abroad.

"We will re-establish democracy and liberate the country through struggle," he said.

Senior BNP leaders and activists were present at the time.
