Ex-GCC mayor Zahangir, his mayoral candidate mother come under attack
Suspended Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Zahangir Alam and his mother Zaida Khatun, an independent candidate in the Gazipur City Corporation's mayoral race, came under attack in ward-57 of the city yesterday.
The incident happened in Tongi railway gate area around 4:30pm while they along with his supporters were campaigning, Zahangir, also chief coordinator of the "Table Clock" symbol, told our Gazipur correspondent.
The supporters of Awami League-backed mayor candidate Azmat Ullah carried out the attack, he claimed.
The attackers threw bricks and stones at them, leaving seven of his supporters injured, Zahangir added.
"Four to five policemen were present at the spot during the attack. Soon after, more policemen arrived at the scene. But the attackers did not stop throwing bricks and stones," he alleged.
Witnesses said the supporters of the "boat" and "table clock" symbols confronted near the Tongi railway gate in the afternoon and hurled bricks and shoes at each other.
Later, workers and supporters of Boat surrounded mayoral candidate Zaida Khatun and Zahangir and kept them there for about an hour, they said. Later, the police rescued them.
Azmat Ullah Khan could not be reached over phone.
Earlier, on May 18, a vehicle carrying Zahangir and his mother was attacked in ward-44 of the city.
