5 political parties failed to submit financial statement to EC

Five political parties have failed to submit their annual financial statement to the Election Commission (EC) for 2020, an official of Election Commission said today.

Gonoforum, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal, Gonofront, Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Bangladesh Sangiskritik Jote did not submit their financial statement till 5:00PM today which was the extended deadline.

Of them, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal applied for time extension, said EC officials.

Thirty four out of 39 registered political parties have submitted their annual financial statement.

As per the Representation of the People Order, 1972, each registered political party is obliged to submit its financial statement of the previous calendar year by July 31. But the EC extended the time till August 31 due to Covid-19.

EC Deputy Secretary Abdul Halim Khan said that they would submit a report on political parties which have submitted their statement to the commission soon.

According to the law, EC can cancel the registration of political parties if they fail to submit their financial audit report, Abdul Halim Khan said.
