11 hurt in chase, counter-chase between AL, rebel candidates in Patuakhali

At least 11 people were injured in a chase and counter-chase between the supporters of Awami League's chairman and rebel candidates of the upcoming UP election in Patuakhali's Baufal upazila last night.

Locals said the chase and counter-chase occurred between the supporters of AL candidate of Naomala union parishad Kamal Hossain and rebel aspirant Shahzada Hawladar on Naomala College Road around 9:30pm.

The two groups hurled brick chips at each other, our Patuakhali reports quoting the eyewitnesses.

Among the 11 injured, one was rushed to Baufal Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Baufal Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Mamun.

However, no group has lodged any written complaint so far, said the OC.

Contacted, Shahzada said, "The AL candidate and his supporters are trying to make chaos in the area as they do have public support. They attacked my supporters out of jealousy of my popularity."

Denying the allegation, Kamal said Shahzada's followers attacked his people without any provocation.
