100 injured as BNP men clash with AL, police in Kishoreganj

Around 100 people were injured as BNP activists locked in clashes with Awami League men and police personnel in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj today (September 3, 2022).
Some policemen also sustained injuries in the clashes but the number was yet to be confirmed, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting police.
Although there was no permission for a rally today, BNP men brought out processions in Pakundia municipal areas and began marching towards the main roads of the municipality around 11:00 am. When police asked them to stop, they started throwing brickbats at them, followed by chases and counter chases, said Md Al Amin Hossain, additional superintendent of police (Kishoreganj Sadar Circle).
At one stage, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas canisters to bring the situation under control, said the ASP.
The official, however, could not immediately confirm the number of rubber bullets and tear gas canisters fired at the agitating BNP men.
There were also sporadic clashes between BNP and AL men in different areas under the municipality.
Md Kamal Uddin, joint convener of Pakundia upazila unit of BNP, alleged that police attacked the BNP men without any provocation while they were holding peaceful rallies and some 100 activists were injured in the police action.
AL men, equipped with sticks and sharp weapons, also joined the policemen in attacking the BNP activists, alleged Kamal.
He also claimed some 50 BNP men sustained rubber bullet injuries and one of them was in critical condition.
The injured BNP men are being treated at different hospitals and clinics, Kamal added.
However, local AL leader and Pakundia Municipality Mayor Nazrul Islam Akanda, claimed that the BNP activists were causing vandalism and some ruling party men were injured while trying to stop them.
Police so far detained 12 BNP activists and the situation is under control at present, said Md Sarwar Jahan, officer-in-charge of Pakundia Police Station.
