Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury laid to eternal rest
With tears and heavy heart, hundreds of people including the Awami League leaders and workers buried Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Leader and AL Presidium Member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury this evening (September 12, 2022) at the Banani Graveyard with state honour.
One of the country's prominent political figures, Sajeda Chowdhury who played crucial role to organise AL following brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, died yesterday (September 11, 2022) at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 87.
Before she was laid to her final rest, her second namaz-e-janaza was held at south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Asr prayers.
Her first namaz-e-janaza was held in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur. Thousands of people from all walks of life took part in the janaza braving rains.
She was given a guard of honour before the janaza.
Later her body was brought to the capital from Faridpur by a helicopter and taken to AL central office in the city's Bangabandhu Avenue.
The body was kept at the party office for some time to let the party leaders and activists, as well as other political leaders, to get a last glimpse of their beloved political colleague.
Later, the body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar and kept there for a while to allow people from all walks of life to pay their tributes to the veteran politician and one of the organisers of the country's Liberation War.
She was given state guard of honour at the Central Shahid Minar on behalf of the Dhaka Deputy Commission.
Homage was paid to Sajeda Chowdhury on behalf of President Abdul Hamid and PM Sheikh Hasina.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Cabinet members, MPs, and people of different walks of life also showed their last respect to Sajeda Chowdhury.
Sajeda Chowdhury was admitted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) after her health condition became critical last week, where she breathed her last.
The sixth time MP was elected parliament member from Faridpur-2 constituency.
Sajeda Chowdhury was born on May 8 in 1935.
The veteran politician joined politics from AL in 1956. After the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975, she played an important role in keeping the AL organised at a critical moment.
In 1976, Sajeda Chowdhury became the AL's acting general secretary. Later, she was the party's full general secretary from 1986 to 1992. Before that, she was the general secretary of Mahila Awami League from 1969 to 1975.
Sajeda Chowdhury was elected one of the seven gano parishad members in 1970's election.
