Shafiqual Haque Choudhury’s death anniv
Today is the second death anniversary of Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, founder and president of Association for Social Advancement (ASA), a leading microfinance institution serving millions of borrowers across the country.
An advisor to the former caretaker government, Choudhury passed away on February 12, 2021 due to a massive cardiac shock. He was 72 years old.
Born in Habiganj in 1949, he obtained a master's degree in sociology from Dhaka University in 1969 and worked as a trainer for the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD).
In the volatile days of the country, Shafiqual founded ASA in 1978 in remote Tapra village under the then Manikganj sub-division with a mission of welfare of the poor, marginalised and disadvantaged and the vision to establish a poverty-free society.
He also established various institutions including ASA University.
