Ten more lives lost on roads

Amid the government's failure to stop reckless driving, operation of unfit vehicles, jaywalking, and inadequate implementation of law, 10 people were killed and 16 injured in six accidents across the country yesterday.

In Bogura, at least three persons were killed and another was injured in a collision between a pick-up and a truck in Adamdighi upazila.

The deceased were identified as Md Rafiqul Islam of Masterpara of Naogaon's Sapahar upazila; Dadan Mia, 46, of Dhaka's Kamrangirchar upazila, and Md Mostak Ali, 45, of Naogaon Sadar upazila, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Adamdighi Police Station.

Injured Md Saiful Islam, 22, of Dhaka's Kamrangirchar area, is receiving treatment at the Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman College hospital.

OC Rezaul said, "A truck was pulling a broken-down truck with a rope towards Naogaon. At around 3:30am, a Naogaon-bound pick-up from Bogura hit the broken-down truck from behind. Two people of the pick-up died on the spot due to the collision."

Police and fire service personnel rescued the two injured and sent them to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. One of them died while undergoing treatment, said Sub-inspector Dulal Hossain of Bogura medical outpost.

In Barishal, three people were killed and three injured as a bus rammed a vehicle locally called "trolley" on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Bimanbandar area in the afternoon, UNB reports.

The deceased are Emdadul Haque, 38, from Kashipur union; Nadeem Howlader, 12, son of Md Sentu Howlader from Rahmatpur Badamtala area; and Sinbad from the same area.

Identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

Biman Bandar Police Station OC (investigation) Lokman Hossain said the accident occurred around 2:00pm when the bus of Goon Goon Paribahan crashed into the trolley in Chhoy Mile Road area.

Police seized the bus but the driver and his helper managed to flee, added the OC.

In Dhaka, a 65-year-old unidentified woman was killed when a private car knocked her down in the city's Shahbagh area, reports UNB.

SI Md Shahabuddin of Shahbagh Police Station said the accident occurred in the dead of night while she was crossing a road.

The body was taken to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

In Chattogram, an elderly man was killed and two were injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw plunged into a roadside ditch while trying to avoid hitting a girl on a road in Banshkhali upazila in the morning.

The accident took place in front of Chenchuria SKB Community Centre, said police.

Shafiul Alam Jihadi, 60, from Cox's Bazar, was declared dead at Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex.

The injured -- Marufa Akhter, 9, and Md Forkan, 38 -- were receiving treatment at the health complex, said Banshkhali Police Station OC Kamal Uddin.

In Pabna, a bus and a truck collided head-on on Pabna-Rajshahi highway at Muladuli, leaving one person dead and 10 injured.

Following the accident, vehicular movement remained halted on the road for an hour. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Pakshey Highway Police Station OC Ashish Kumar said the accident took place near Muladuli Bazar around 10:30am as drivers of both the vehicles lost their control over the steering.

In Rajbari, a rickshaw-puller was killed when a bus hit his vehicle on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Tanaposha Diversion area under Goalanda upazila.

Zahid Sheikh, 40, of Adarshagram area was declared dead at Goalanda Upazila Health Complex.
