Tangail free day observed

A five-day celebration programme, marking the Tangail free day, began yesterday amid festivity in the town.

Tangail was freed from the occupation of Pakistani Army on December 11, 1971.

On this day in 1971, freedom fighters (FFs) hoisted the national flag of independent Bangladesh after freeing Tangail from the Pakistani occupational forces.

To mark the historical day, Tangail municipality has taken a five-day long, from December 11 to December 16, victory festival programme titled "Bijoy Utsab" at Shaheed Smrity Pouro Udyan in the town.

The five-day Bijoy Utsab programme was inaugurated yesterday morning by releasing balloons and pigeons.

Later, a colourful procession was brought out in the town.

People from all walks of life, including freedom fighters, local public representatives, politicians, government officials and many other individuals took part in the procession that paraded the main roads of the town.

During the Liberation War, the brave freedom fighters of Tangail gave their best efforts and created history.

The stories of their braveness and extra ordinary heroic roles spread all over.

The heroism of the 'Kaderia Bahini,' led by brave Freedom Fighter Abdul Kader Siddique, during the Liberation War will be remembered forever.

After the formation of Zila Swadhin Bangla Gono Mukti Parishad on March in 1971, local youths started organising.

Trainings of the freedom fighters were also continuing simultaneously.

On April 3, the Pakistani Army entered Tangail town, breaking the resistance of the freedom fighters at Goran-Satiachara in Mirzapur.

But, within a few days, Kaderia Bahini got united again and started fighting with the occupation army in different places of the district.

On the other hand, another group of the freedom fighters led by Khandakar Abdul Baten, now late, started resisting the occupational forces at different spots.

However, the Kaderia Bahini played the main role of resistance and the Pakistani army made bewildered by their attacks from the all sides.

On December 10, with the landing of around 2,000 paratroopers of the 'Mitro Bahini' in Poulee area near Tangail town Pakistani Army started turning back to Dhaka.

On December 11, members of the 'Kaderia Bahini' entered the town, captured the police station and hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh there.
