‘Stop fossil fuel use to ensure food sovereignty’
Vulnerable fisher community of remote Brindabannagar village in Sunamganj Sadar upazila staged a demonstration yesterday demanding food sovereignty.
The programme, marking World Food Day, was organised by Haor Area Upliftment Society (Haus) in association with Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (Clean) and Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED).
"Fossil fuels are to blame for global warming and climate change, as a result of which food security of the vulnerable people will be immensely threatened. The people of haor are among the most vulnerable communities who will face the brunt of climate change first," said Salehin Chowdhury, executive director of Haus.
The participants brought placards stating their demands, which include food sovereignty, ending use of fossil fuels, preventing fossil fuel infrastructure in farmland, incorporating agrovoltaic project in IEPNP, withdrawing duty on accessories of renewable energy, and formulating a land leasing policy for renewable energy.
