Vested quarter out to thwart bridge opening
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked all the security forces, including the armed forces, to stay alert before the inauguration of the Padma Bridge.
People who opposed the construction of the bridge are now out to do something destructive to interrupt its grand opening on June 25, she said.
She made the remarks while addressing the 36th founding anniversary function of the Special Security Force (SSF) at the Shapla Hall, in PMO.
"We have constructed the Padma Bridge taking a huge challenge. The people who opposed it have a target. We have got some information that such an incident can be made that we can't open the bridge on June 25 next. But we don't know what they will do exactly," she said.
The prime minister also asked the chiefs of army, navy and air force, and police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and Ansar to stay alert in safeguarding the key point installations such as the Rooppur Power Plant, Metro Rail and tunnel under the Karnaphuli.
"I would like to tell you all who are present here to stay alert," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the World Bank stopped its funding to construct the Padma Bridge because of the provocation of Muhammad Yunus and his friend Hillary Clinton.
Immediately after the halt of World Bank funding, she said she had announced plans to build the bridge with own finance.
"And we've done it with our own funding despite many people thinkingthat we could not do it," she said.
Referring to the recent fire incidents, she said, "All the matters are mysterious. So, I ask all of you to remain alert and keep careful eyes on all the key point installations."
She also greeted all the security forces including armed forces, police, Rab, BGB, and Ansar for their role in containing militancy and terrorism in the country.
PM's Security Adviser Major General (rtd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique and Principal Secretary Ahmad Kaikaus, were present on the dais while SSF Director General Maj Gen Mazibur Rahman delivered the welcome speech.
