SC to hear Dr Yunus’ petitions on Jul 17

The Supreme Court yesterday fixed July 17 for hearing three petitions filed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus challenging a High Court verdict that justified the decision of imposing tax on the money gifted by him to his three charitable trusts.

Chamber judge of the SC's Appellate Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim sent the leave to appeal petitions to its full bench for their hearing.

On May 31, the HC delivered the verdict saying that the decision of imposing tax on the money gifted by Yunus to his three charitable trusts is legal.

The HC verdict means that Yunus will have to pay around Tk 12 crore as tax on the money he donated to his trusts, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told reporters on that day.

He said around Tk 15 crore tax was imposed on the donated money in different years and Prof Yunus has deposited over Tk 3 crore to the office concerned before challenging the decisions.
