‘Reopen university, dorms by Sept 30’
Jahangirnagar University students yesterday staged a demonstration on the campus demanding resumption of in-person academic activities and reopening of dormitories by September 30.
Around 11:30am, students from different departments brought out a procession from the new arts building which ended at the new administrative building.
At a rally, general secretary of JU unit of Bangladesh Students Union Rakibul Rony said the university authorities could not inform the University Grants Commission about the progress of students' inoculation.
"If the authorities fail to reopen the institution by that time, it would be clear that vaccination was not the reason to keep the university closed for months," he added.
Later, students submitted a memorandum with a three-point demand to acting vice chancellor Prof Nurul Alam. In the memorandum, they also demanded installation of vaccination booth inside the campus.
Contacted, acting registrar Rahima Kaneez said, 'The university will reopen soon after a syndicate meeting. Besides, we have to complete some proceedings before reopening of residential halls."
Meanwhile, Prof Anu Muhammad of the economics department will hold a "protest class" in the open this noon, demanding immediate reopening of the university.
He confirmed that he will deliver a lecture on the topic "The role of education and health sector on the development of Bangladesh" on the premises of social science faculty building.
