Post-deprived BCL men lock campus, halt shuttle train

With the demand to dissolve the newly announced, full-fledged committee of Chittagong University's Chhatra League unit, a section of BCL men staged a demonstration yesterday, disrupting campus activities.

After it is dissolved, they want committee posts for those who were "deprived" of them.

The aggravated men has locked CU's main entrance and halted campus-bound shuttle-train movement, after picking up the loco master and his assistant. They were later let go. Following the demonstration, no academic activities took place on campus on the day, as the men also prevented teachers' buses from entering the premises.

On Sunday night, BCL central committee announced a full-fledged 375-member committee for the campus after three years. On July 15, 2019, BCL nominated Rejaul Hoque Rubel and Iqbal Hossen Tipu as president and general secretary, respectively, of the unit for one year. They are still in their posts.

In the morning, around 50 leaders and activists gathered in the campus's Zero Point area and protested.

Three people, including the loco-master, were picked up by the protestors, and no trains operated on the CU route yesterday, said Tanmoy Chowdhury, station master of Sholoshahar Railway Station.

Agitated leaders and activists have vandalised at least 40 rooms of the university's five residential halls, said their residents. A BCL leader who got a post in the new committee claimed that he was beaten up by those who were deprived of posts.

Shahidul Islam, assistant proctor of CU, said, "We are trying to bring the situation under control."
