Man held with 3.21kg gold at Dhaka airport
Members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and National Security Intelligence (NSI) have arrested a passenger with 3.21kg gold worth Tk 3.20 crore from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.
The arrestee Sumon Hossain, 43, was apprehended in front of the airport's Concourse Hall around 5:00pm, said APBn's Additional Superintendent of Police Ziaul Haque yesterday.
He said Sumon arrived at the airport from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight on Saturday. He was arrested on suspicion after he passed through the green channel at the customs checkpoint.
Sumon admitted to collaborating with a gold smuggling ring, said the police official.
He said two Sharjah expatriates had offered Sumon money to smuggle the gold into Bangladesh.
Hailing from Munshiganj, Sumon had regularly used his overseas travels to import goods through baggage facilities.
The police official said that a case was filed against Sumon under the Special Powers Act with the Airport Police Station.
