Man drowns while 'trying to swim across to India'
A man drowned in Gadadharpur Baor (a dead arm of a river) while trying to enter India through Jashore's Chougacha border by swimming across.
The deceased, Rafiqul Islam Jony, (53), an engineer by profession, was a resident of Moghbazar area in Dhaka, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting Saiful Islam Sabuj, officer-in-charge of Chougacha Police Station.
Police recovered the floating body from Gadadharpur Baor, adjacent to Mashila border of the upazila which was later identified by the family members of the victim through fingerprints, said the OC.
His nephew, Masrequl Islam, said his maternal uncle was a diploma engineer. His wife is worked at Bangladesh Krishi Bank's head office.
"Two or three days ago, he told me that he want to go to India to visit his mother's grave. But the tenure of his passport was expired," he said.
"I told him (Rafiqul) that I am going to Secretariat and will look after the issue when I will return," he added.
"Without informing anyone, he went to Jashore's Jikargacha to visit his niece's house. From there, he contacted his cousin Mohan in India and was trying to cross the border and drowned while trying to cross the Baor swimming," he added.
Shahin, a night guard of Gadadharpur Baor said he had seen the floating body early Friday night and informed the matter to Mashila BGB camp.
On information, police recovered the body from the baor.
OC Saiful said they came to know that the deceased was trying to enter India using brokers after swimming the lake.
The body was sent to Jashore General Hospital for autopsy.
