It’s discriminatory
The provision at Jagannath University's residential hall, requiring married and pregnant women to vacate, is discriminatory and should be withdrawn immediately, said CSO Forum for Strengthening Sustainable SRHR Ecosystem in Bangladesh yesterday.
On September 25, Dipika Rani Sarker, provost of Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of JnU, issued a notice, directing married and pregnant students to leave the hall as per rules.
"Such discriminatory provisions and its implementation in residential halls are very worrying and condemnable," read a press release issued by Dr Sayed Rubayet, convener of CSO Forum.
"This discriminatory regulation is a clear violation of articles 19, 27 and 28 of the constitution. This goes against the government's national and international commitments to establish and protect women's rights," it also said.
The forum members include Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Nari Pakkho, Marie Stopes Bangladesh, icddr,b, Brac, BLAST, Care Bangladesh and ASK.
