Implement 9th wage board now
Journalists yesterday announced to launch a tough movement if their four-point demand, including implementation of the "Ninth Wage Board Award" is not fulfilled immediately.
Their other demands include nullifying the government's recent gazette declaring 29 agencies and institutions as "critical information infrastructure" and amending the Digital Security Act.
Journalists placed the demands while addressing a demonstration organised by Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) in front of the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
Media workers are passing hard days as newspaper owners are yet to implement the ninth wage board, though its gazette was published over three years ago, said Omar Faruque, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).
The government must pressurise the owners to implement the ninth wage board immediately, he said. "We will launch a nationwide movement, if the ninth wage board is not implemented immediately."
Senior journalist Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul said the "critical information infrastructures" provision has been issued to harass journalists and limit their access to information.
Presiding over the function, DUJ's Sohel Haider Chowdhury announced to enforce a token hunger-strike on November 22 if their demands are not met by this time.
BFUJ Secretary General Dip Azad, General Secretary Akhter Hossain, and over a dozen journalists spoke at the function.
