Highway robbery leaves 7 injured
The night had settled on the Tangail-Mymensingh highway, and the passengers of a bus headed towards Jamalpur were settling in for their journey. Little did they know that they were about to become the victims of a dangerous robbery.
As the bus passed through Ashulia, a gang of 8-10 robbers boarded the vehicle and blended in with the other passengers. For several hours, they bided their time until the bus reached Deolabari in Madhupur, where they sprang into action.
The robbers took control of the bus, holding the passengers at gunpoint and forcing them to surrender their cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments. However, they did not stop there. They beat and stabbed seven passengers, leaving them injured and terrified.
Finally, the robbers disembarked at Narkona in Madhupur, leaving behind a bus full of traumatised passengers and a trail of violence and theft.
The injured passengers were rushed to the Madhupur Upazila Health Complex, where they received medical attention.
Among them were Tara Mia from Mesta village of Jamalpur Sadar upazila and Kakali Begum from Satpoa village of Sarishabari upazila. They were later transferred to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Rabiul Islam, one of the passengers of the bus, said the bus with 30-40 passengers left from Dhaka's Mohakhali bus terminal around 10:00pm on Monday. The robbers boarded the bus in the guise of passengers on the way and then took control of the bus around 1:30am, he added.
The robbers made off with goods worth approximately Tk 5 lakh, said Madhupur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Amin.
"The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to bring the perpetrators to justice," he added.
