Harassed for wearing teep: Withdrawn Sylhet police inspector transferred
The police inspector in Sylhet, who was withdrawn over a Facebook post mocking the ongoing protests against the harassment of a college teacher for wearing a teep, has been transferred to Rangpur.
Liaquat Ali was the court inspector of Sylhet District Police. A circular signed by Dr Md Moynur Rahman Chowdhury, additional inspector general of police HQ, was issued in this regard.
Last night, Liaquat was withdrawn from his post and attached to Sylhet Police Lines.
A three-member probe body was also formed today to investigate the matter, reports our Sylhet correspondent quoting Additional Superintendent of Sylhet District Police Md Lutfar Rahman.
Lutfar Rahman said, "He was transferred on the grounds of 'public interest', according to the circular."
On Saturday, many took to social media to protest the harassment of a college teacher. Several men on Facebook protested the harassment by wearing a teep.
Liaquat Ali posted about the protest on his personal Facebook account last afternoon. In his post, he made fun of the men who were protesting the incident by wearing teep. When the issue sparked outrage on social media, he deleted the post.
Tejgaon College teacher Lata Samaddar complained that a policeman harassed and hurled abusive words at her after seeing a teep on her forehead while she was going to the campus on April 2, 2022.
Amid the outrage on social media and beyond, Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday suspended constable Nazmul Tareque, who was accused of harassing the college teacher for wearing a teep.
