Good days for Jhenidah potters
With the arrival of winter sale of earthen pots sees a sharp rise in different upazila of the district, famous for date juice.
As a result, around 5,000 potter families of the district are now earning a good bucks selling the pottery item to the farmers.
Usually, sale of earthen pots, used for collecting and storing date juice, sees a rise during the winter.
While talking to this correspondent, potters Ramesh Kumar Paul and Robin Kumar Paul of Shibnagar village in Kaliganj upazila said they used to make a good profit by selling earthen pots over two decades ago.
But, the demand for the pottery item is declining now due to availability of attractive plastic jars in the markets, they said, adding that they sell each pair of earthen pots at Tk 70 to Tk 80 in the winter, while it is being sold for Tk 50 to Tk 55 in the other time of the year.
In the winter, earthen pots are sold hugely as date juice cannot be collect or store in plastic jars, another potter Dilip Kumar Paul of Solaimanpur village in Kotchandpur upazila said.
Currently, about 5,000 people in Jhenidah are engaged with the profession, he added.
Farmer Arman Ali of Enayetpur village in Kaliganj said he has 85 date trees.
Every year, he purchase 120 earthen pots for collecting the sap from his trees, he said.
Each pair of the pots costs him Tk 70 to Tk 80 in the winter, while the price remains almost half in the rest of the year.
Bharat Mondal, another farmer from Beleghat in Shailakupa upazila, said he has 40 date trees and needs 60 earthen pots every year.
