Indigenous Community: ‘Form separate rights commission for them’
Activists of Adivasi Chhatra Sangram Parishad yesterday demanded a separate human rights commission to prevent "oppression against indigenous women".
They placed the demand during a rally protesting the rape of a woman from Hajong community in Sunamganj on August 14. They also demanded exemplary punishment for the rapist.
They held the protest rally in front of the National Museum in Dhaka in the morning.
The rally also protested the "conspiracy" by the forest department to cut down crops owned by the Garo community at Sherpur's Sreebordi and evict people from the Garo and Khasia communities from Moulvibazar's Sahebtila.
The programme was attended by some Dhaka University teachers who spoke to the attendance following the rally.
Prof Khairul Chowdhury of DU's sociology department said, "Incidents of torture, oppression against indigenous women are taking place all around the country. It's time to form an indigenous rights commission to solve their problems."
