Don’t publish anything that hurts image of country
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the journalist community not to publish any such news or criticise in such a way that hampers the country's advancement and image.
She said she always welcomes constructive criticism from the media outlets so that the government can correct itself.
"Constructive news helps the government run the country," she said while distributing cheques of financial assistance worth about Tk 3.41 crore to 438 ailing, insolvent and injured journalists and their family members at her office.
Her government believes in freedom of speech.
"The journalist community did not enjoy such freedom that they enjoyed in the last 14 years of the Awami League government," she said, adding that the freedom that has been given to the media will further flourish once the country becomes digital.
The media will definitely criticise the government but that should be done responsibly.
"I want that the advancement of Bangladesh is not hampered anymore due to irresponsible journalism."
The premier said her government is going to bring employees of private television channels under the wage board.
Hasina recalled that journalists were inhumanly tortured during the BNP-Jamaat government.
She also called upon the media owners to donate money to the Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust.
The PM said her government can arrange a piece of land as journalists wanted to build houses for themselves or give them flats taking payment in instalments.
Hasan Mahmud, the information and broadcasting minister, and Humayun Kabir Khandaker, the ministry's secretary, also spoke on the occasion.
