DMC morgue runs out of space
Rows of bodies of the victims of Thursday night's fire in Narayanganj are lined up on the floor of Dhaka Medical College mortuary, which doesn't have room or freezing capacity for this many bodies.
At least 49 bodies were brought to the morgue from Narayanganj for autopsies as of 3:00pm yesterday. But the freezers had room for only six.
Half of the mortuary's 20 freezers have already been occupied and four are out of order, Mortuary Assistant Sikandar Ali said, adding that the management is trying to figure out what can be done.
Meanwhile, the area was already shrouded by a strong odor from the bodies yesterday evening.
Since the bodies are burnt beyond recognition, they will have to be identified through DNA tests before they are handed over to the families, said Shamim Bepari, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj.
He told The Daily Star that Tk 25,000 was given to each of the family of the dead victims and Tk 10,000 to each of the family of the injured ones.
