Bribes now exchanged in dollars: HC

Bribes are exchanged in dollars, not takas, nowadays.

The High Court said this yesterday, also asking what action the Anti-Corruption Commission takes in this regard.

"Doesn't it [the ACC] see this?" the HC bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Ali questioned, citing newspaper reports, while hearing a writ petition filed over irregularities in appointing staff in prison.

One Jahirul Islam from Sylhet filed the petition claiming that he had qualified for a prison guard's position through exams, but did not get the job as another Jahirul Islam was given the position through fraudulent means.

Contacted, advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, principal counsel for Jahirul, could not give details about the writ petition.

Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al-Mahmud Bashar told The Daily Star that the office of the inspector general of prisons recently submitted a compliance report to the HC, saying around 200 prison guards are employed in the prisons of Chattogram and Sylhet.

Of them, the office of inspector general of prisons found that fraudulence occurred in the appointments of 88 guards, and three got jobs doing in place of others with the same names, he added.

The HC will deliver an order on the writ petition today, he added.
