Birshrestha Jahangir's death anniversary today
Today is the 51st death anniversary of Birshreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, one of the seven greatest heroes of the Bangladesh War of Independence.
On this day in 1971, just two days before the country's victory, Jahangir embraced martyrdom in a battle with the Pakistani occupation forces at Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town.
Jahangir along with 50 freedom fighters crossed the Mohananda River for an operation against Pakistan Army on December 10, 1971.
They took position near Rehaichar on December 13. The next day, he went ahead of the defence line and charged grenades into a trench of the Pakistan occupation army. But he was hit by a bullet from the Pakistan army and died on the spot.
He was buried near the graveyard of another valiant freedom fighter Major Najmul Haque on the premises of Sonamasjid in Shibganj upazila.
Marking his death anniversary, Muktijoddha Sangsad, local administration and different socio-cultural and political organisations will pay tribute to him by placing wreaths at his grave at Sonamasjid and at a memorial built at the killing spot at Rehaichar, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.
Born on March 6, 1945 in Barisal, Jahangir passed his SSC exams from Muladi Mahbudjan High School in 1964 and HSC from Barisal BM College.
In 1967, he enrolled at the department of Statistics of Dhaka University and later that year joined the armed forces as a cadet at the Pakistan Military Academy.
After successfully completing his training with the 15th war course, Jahangir was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. Later, he was posted at 173 Engineer's Battalion in Multan. After working with the battalion for six months, he was shifted to Military College of Engineering in Risalpur. After finishing the 13-month long training he took bomb-disposal training.
