AL keeps its trust in a rebel

Nurul Huda Mukut and Noman Bakht Palin have been made president and general secretary of Awami League's Sunamganj district unit respectively. Currently, Nurul Huda is also  the zilla parishad chairman.

Awami League Central General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the new committee after the triennial council of the unit  yesterday afternoon.

"The infighting of the party has damaged us a lot. Keep Awami League united. Remember, no one can defeat AL if the party is united," Quader said in his speech.

He also announced former general secretary Enamul Kabir Imon as a member of the national committee.

Although the council is supposed to be held every three years, the last one was held on February 25, 2016.

The newly-elected president is a polarised figure in the local political scene. He was suspended by the previous district committee after he contested for the latest Zila Parishad polls against Khairul Kabir Romen, the nominated candidate of the party.

But after he came out victorious at the polls held on October 17 last year, the suspension was uplifted by the Al central committee.

Earlier in 2016 Zilla Parishad Polls, Mukut similarly won as a rebel candidate and defeated AL candidate Barrister Enamul Kabir Emon.

According to a report published by The Daily Star on October 30, Planning Minister MA Mannan was blamed for supporting Nurul Huda Mukut by the AL higher-ups, while central committee member Azizus Samad Don was also criticised for his inactivity to work for the AL candidate.
