AL-backed panel sweeps in Bangladesh Bar Council election

Pro-Awami League lawyers have bagged 10 executive member posts, out of total 14, of the Bangladesh Bar Council.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, ex-officio chairman of the Bar Council, the licencing and regulatory body of the lawyers, announced the results in the council's office in Dhaka at early hours of today, five days after the election was held throughout the country on May 25.

According to official results, pro-AL lawyers' white panel bagged 10 posts while pro-BNP lawyers' blue panel won the four remaining posts.

The winning pro-AL lawyers are: Syed Rezaur Rahman; Mohammad Sayeed Ahmed Raza; Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman Badal; Md Rabiul Alam Budu; Abdul Baten; Md Jalal Uddin Khan; AF Md Ruhul Anam Chowdhury Mintu; Anis Uddin Ahmed Shahid; Md Ekramul Haque and Md Abdur Rahman.

The BNP-Jamaat backed lawyers, who were elected in the election, are Zainul Abedin, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and ASM Badrul Anwar, Deputy Attorney General AM Amin Uddin Manik, who observed the election and counting of votes, told The Daily Star this morning.

The elected members of the bar in their first meeting will elect a vice-chairman for the council and form other committees to run the organisation for the next three years, he added.
