Acceptance of GCC polls ‘shaken’
The upcoming Gazipur city polls may still be held in a free, fair and neutral manner but its acceptance has already been "shaken," said Prof Robayet Ferdous of Dhaka University's mass communication and journalism department, yesterday.
He made the remarks at a press conference at the Gazipur Press Club auditorium, organised by Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan).
"One of the reasons for this situation is that a large political party (BNP) has decided to boycott the polls," Prof Robayet stated.
He emphasised that voters should have access to all the relevant information about the contesting candidates, as it will facilitate the selection of their preferred candidate.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of elected candidates ensuring accountability, competency, transparency, and participation once they take office.
Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Shujan central coordinator, expressed the desire for a level playing field for all the contesting candidates.
The press conference was presided over by Shujan Gazipur district president Amjad Hossain.
