3 women killed in truck-pickup van collision

Three women were killed and 10 injured in a collision between a pickup van and a truck on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Habiganj's Bahubal upazila early yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Monjila Begum, 45, Tanjila Begum, 35, and Shahinur Begum, 45, said Officer-in-Charge of Shaistaganj Highway Police Station Mainul Islam.

The OC said the pickup van, heading towards shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet with 15 passengers, collided head-on with an oncoming truck around 1:00am in Mouchak area.

Ten people, including children, were also injured in the accident, the OC said, adding that the injured had been admitted to local hospitals.

Meanwhile in Jamalpur, a 4-year-old girl died after an auto-rickshaw hit her in Islampur upazila.

The deceased is Muslima Akhter, daughter of Mojibur Rahman of Digreechar village.

The accident happened around 3:15pm when a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit Muslima while she was crossing a road, said police. Locals caught the driver and handed him over to police.
