20 km tailback on both sides of Bangabandhu Bridge
Increased number of vehicles on the Tangail-Sirajganj route has created long tailbacks on both sides of the Bangabandhu Bridge since last night.
Tailback extended for about 20 km from the eastern end of Bangabandhu Bridge to Rabna Bypass in Tangail this morning, reports our local correspondent.
On the other hand, a 22 km tailback formed on from the western end of the bridge till Hatikumrul in Sirajganj.
Yasser Arafat, in-charge of the Elenga Highway Police Outpost said that there were at least three times as many vehicles on the highway than usual.
Traffic congestion was intensified even more by the unfinished flyover at Kadda in Sirajganj and a narrow, risky bridge in Nalka area, he added.
The bridge authorities had also stopped toll collection for some time yesterday causing more pressure on the highways.
Meanwhile, vehicles were moving slowly on the highway from the west end of Bangabandhu Bridge to Hatikumrul in Sirajganj.
Home-goers for Eid holiday were stuck for long hours on the road. Besides, vehicles coming to Dhaka from north Bengal carrying cattle were also stuck on the route.
Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahjahan Ali said vehicles were moving slowly on the highway from Bangabandhu Bridge to Hatikumrul due to increasing pressure of homebound people and cattle-laden vehicles.
In addition to traffic and highway police, additional police forces have been deployed at various points on the highway to reduce traffic congestion, he added.
