A group of Bangladeshi stone-lifting workers working near pillar No 732/1-S inside India were asked to leave the area by BSF members of Mahananda camp of 176-BSF Battalion around 8:30am, according to Tariqul Islam, a 29-year-old coworker of the injured.

Later, the BSF members opened fire on the workers as the group was returning to Bangladesh. Humayun sustained a bullet wound to his thigh, Tariqul said.

He was rushed to Tentulia Upazila Health Complex by his colleagues, and as his condition worsened, he was later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment, he added.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) wrote to BSF in protest of the incident.

Later this afternoon, BGB and BSF held a battalion commander-level hour-long flag meeting on the zero point of the Phulbari border, during which the BSF commander expressed regret for the incident.

According to commanding officer of 18-BGB Battalion of Panchagarh, Lt Col Mahfujul Haque, the BSF commander also gave the BGB leader an assurance that administrative action would be taken against the BSF personnel involved in the incident following an investigation.
