Will compromise with people, not with extortionists: Ivy
Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy today said she will compromise with the people of Narayanganj but not with extortionists.
Ivy said this at noon today on the first day at the office after taking charge as the mayor for the third consecutive time at her temporary office in Nitaiganj of the city.
Referring to her position against terrorism, and extortion in Narayanganj, Ivy said "I'll work above all else. My position will be the same as it was in the past. I did not come here with any compromising attitude. I will compromise with the people for work, but not with any terrorist, extortionist."
"It is a new beginning [as mayor]. But I'm not someone new, I have been here before. For many days, I worked here alongside everyone. Some new councillors have been elected this time. I hope we will be able to work together to meet the people's demand," she also said.
"You [the people] have witnessed in the past I made it a priority to listen to the demands of the people and run this city accordingly," Ivy said.
To the newly elected councillors, the mayor said: "You will assist us so that we can work as per the people's demands. The people have elected us with a lot of expectations. I call upon my council to work for people's welfare. I will deliver my responsibilities in the same way I did for last 18 years at the office. I hope you all [councillors] will assist me, and so will the city dwellers".
"Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the ongoing projects and those projects will be completed as soon as possible," she added.
Later in the afternoon, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Manjurul Hafeez and Superintendent of Police (SP) Zayedul Alam greeted Ivy.
