Section of Bangladeshis behind US sanctions on Rab: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today blamed a section of Bangladeshis for the United States' sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
"There is nothing to say if people defame their own country abroad…the sanctions on Rab came as a group of domestic people applied efforts on it," she said in a reply to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party MP Mujibul Haque Chunnu from Kishoreganj-3.
Hasina said the USA after the 9/11 incident had suggested different countries to curb terrorism and following their advice the then BNP government had formed Rab.
She said that there is no doubt that BNP have used Rab arbitrarily.
However, she said that during the regime of Awami League, Rab worked to curb terrorism, militancy, repression of women, investigation of any murder or such human activities.
She continued that there are some people in the country who live well whenever any "unusual government" is in power as their importance becomes very high at that time.
She said that they do not want to see the "good work" being carried out by the government. They are always spreading propaganda against Bangladesh and have huge complaints against Rab.
The prime minister said that some representatives of that vested quarter went to the USA and filed complaints to the justice department and other places during their meetings.
She also said that no official of the Bangladesh embassy was allowed in any of the meetings. "And the sanctions came that way," the prime minister added.
The leader of the House said that Bangladesh is the only country where if any Rab member commits any unjust act, the person is brought under trial immediately.
"Even the son-in-law of a minister who was an army officer was not spared. Even he was brought under trial. We didn't pardon him," she said.
"If any member of law enforcing agencies commits unjust acts, the government takes legal action as soon as possible. So, there is no scope for raising a question," she added.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that there are some groups of people in the country -- such as "intellectuals" or various types of organisations, and it is their job to earn money by backbiting against Bangladesh.
