UP election violence due to personal conflicts, land disputes: Law Minister

The ongoing Union Parishad (UP) election violence is largely due to personal and factional conflicts and land related disputes, Law Minister Anisul Huq told the parliament today.
Anisul, who is also in-charge of the Election Commission in the parliamentary affairs, said this in response to a question from Jatiya Party's MP Liaquat Hossain Khoka from Narayanganj-3.
With Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair, the question-answer session was tabled.
In the scripted answer, the law minister said that reports of violence had surfaced in several print and electronic media after the first and second round of elections across the country.
"This is one of the reasons why many types of violence have arisen during elections, often due to personal and group conflicts, land disputes and various opportunistic individuals or groups trying to resort to violence against minorities, women and children," he said.
The minister said that the Election Commission has been very alert and vigilant about the election violence.
"Strict instructions have been given to the law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order situation. The Election Commission has written a letter to the concerned government department requesting it to take necessary steps to be aware and vigilant about the election violence," said the law minister.
He also said necessary instructions have been given to the election officials in this regard.
Besides, Anisul Huq said, a letter was sent to the home ministry to inform the commission about the steps taken by the police so far.
