Draft law proposes using ICT in collecting, distributing zakat
The Cabinet today approved, in principle, the draft 'Zakat Fund Management Act 2021' -- keeping the provision of collecting and distributing zakat, using information and communication technology.
The act aims to encourage people to give zakat, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said at a briefing after the Cabinet meeting.
The meeting held at the Secretariat was presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who joined the meeting virtually from Gono Bhaban.
As per the act, a zakat centre will be set up -- fixing amount of zakat per person and issuing certificates for giving zakat, said the Cabinet secretary.
Anyone -- from home and abroad -- will be able to give zakat at any government scheduled bank, he said.
"There is obligation on every eligible Muslim to give zakat. But if anyone finds it troublesome, they can give it to the government fund. Then it will become the government's duty," he said.
