Additional tax for driving vehicles in affluent areas: DNCC mayor
Additional tax will be imposed on driving vehicles in affluent areas like Gulshan and Baridhara, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam said today.
"The number of vehicles has increased and gridlocks have gotten worse. Under the circumstances, we're contemplating tax on vehicles in affluent areas," he said.
The mayor came up with the announcement at a rally held in Dhaka's Malibagh-Khilgaon area, organised on the occasion of World Car-Free Day.
The slogan of this year's car-free day is: "Use public transport and walk, limit use of private cars".
"From Gulshan-1 to Gulshan-2, Kakoli to Gulshan or Baridhara -- only cars and cars. In a family -- father, mother, son and daughter -- everyone has individual cars. Due to this overwhelming number of vehicles, there are congestions on roads. People are cursing out but no one is considering why the situation is so bad."
Talking about taking over footpaths and extortion, the mayor said it has to be addressed socially.
